In the reading, New Opportunities for Interest-Driven Arts Learning in a Digital Age, Peppler discusses interest driven arts learning. Rather than relying on schools to teach them, students can go to the internet to locate information they need to better understand a topic or media form that is of interest of them. This resonated with my personally because one of my learning objectives is to find a few new technologies that I really enjoy and explore them further beyond what we learn in class. A good way to go about this is to look to the Internet for information and tutorials, or to connect me with other people that can provide me with useful information on said topics. On a larger scale, I believe the Internet opens up a lot of doors for students to receive information on an art form that interests them that they may be unable to access anywhere else. Peppler mentions that technology has "the ability to open doors to young people who have historically been left behind in education (12)." The Internet helps open up an array of possibilities that are (most often) free and accessible to anyone as well as a platform to share and receive feedback.
Nancy Baym discusses digital media changing the way in which we relate to others and ourselves in Personal Connections In The Digital Age. Digital media has its upsides and downsides, when looking at the positives, it gives us an opportunity to expand upon real life connections in a way that used to never be possible. Digital media gives us the ability to connect to others that may be far from us or that we may not know in terms of face to face interaction. Digital media allows us to "find and share supportive resources we could never access before (153)." This opens up new forms of learning and connections for us as individuals to explore. Baym says we shouldn't look at online and offline as contrasting, which I agree with. They both serve as aids to one another. When one is more beneficial than the other, that is the form of communication we use, however, both are essential to us in this current time.
