S:Showed my process
This semester I gained a new appreciation for showing the process of my work. I never really document things down while making them, I'll have random scrap papers I write things on and wind up losing them. Being able to go back on my blog and see into my thought process is interesting and also helpful. The assignments that asked us to document our process step by step were really beneficial because I can look back and see exactly how I created what I did or show it to someone else so they can get a better understanding. Technology makes everything look easy but there is a lot that goes into every process and material. I think the screen recordings of the digital paintings I made are really great to look back on. I realized I never uploaded the time lapse video of my fantastical landscape so I attached it below. You can see the ways I tested out ideas and tools on the Procreate app. Visuals that show the steps/process are really helpful in understanding a concept. I think for the stop motion animation and circuitry assignments showing my process will be beneficial for if I want to use these art forms in a classroom setting as they are the kind of processes you need to visually see the steps for to understand how you got the outcome that you did.
E: Explained my outcome
I explained my outcome but documented my successes and failures on the blog. For each assignment I documented the idea I had and the process behind creating it to get my final outcome. Some assignments were more of an exploration and test into a new art form that I had no knowledge of. Some of these outcomes didn't look like much but actually took a lot of trial and error to get to the simple outcome that they are. For scratch and tinkercad I struggled and felt that the explanation of what I did for these assignments gives a better insight into my learning than the actually finished piece. For other assignments by showing my process and different stages of the project you are able to see how I got from point A to point B and why I chose to do certain things. Throughout the semester I looked at other student's blogged to see how they went about documenting their work and took some ideas from them. Writing a detailed explanation or including images/videos can really help to see what made a project what it is. The projects that were more open ended and lended me to an outcome that incorporated my own interests were always much more successful than those that didn't. If you look at my audacity assignment, I followed the instructions and used sounds in my environment to create an audio, however, audio art has never been something I was particularly interested in and sounds in my environment aren't necessarily sounds that I find enjoyable. The outcome of this assignment felt much more disconnected to me as an artist. However, explaining my process and the steps I took to get where I did, still showed my understanding of the software and the way I experimented with it.
L: Linked to vocabulary
I learned a lot of new vocabulary terms as the semester progressed. In the beginning of the semester we focused more on topics that I had prior knowledge of. However, once we got to new mediums I hadn't experienced, vocabulary started popping up left and right that I didn't even realize. Every process has its own set of terminology that is important to know if you want to explain how you did something or ask questions about how to achieve a certain goal. Onion skin in stop motion animation was the first vocabulary term I remember noticing I had never heard of. Learning about this made me understand what that tool was intended for and gave me a reason to experiment with it, which proved to be essential for creating a successful stop motion animation. With laser cutting there was a lot of vocabulary I was unfamiliar with. Raster and vector are two key terms that I had heard of in other applications but never with this meaning. Knowing these vocabulary words is an important part of making sure you are prepping your file correctly and learning how to do so if you need to ask questions. Without knowing the meaning of these terms you cannot only misprint your file but you can also seriously damage the laser cutting machine.
F: Found multiple possibilities
I found multiple ways to approach assignments and tried to test out different processes and ideas each week. Rather than sticking with what was comfortable to me I tried to venture into areas I was not so familiar with. One of my learning objectives was to incorporate traditional art and technology. Over the semester I found multiple opportunities to do this. For stop motion I created drawings that I then made an animation out of. This is also a great way for me to understand how I can combine these materials and bring them into the art classroom. For laser cutting Sarah and I decided to make journals that we would laser cut a cover and back and then bind together through traditional book binding processes. This gave me the chance to combine mediums as well as learn a new process, book binding, this was a lot to take on but was such a great process to learn and I know I will use it in my own art practice as well as in a classroom with students. I also discovered through sharing projects with other classmates that there are a variety of ways to approach the same assignment. This encouraged me to venture out of my comfort zone on assignments as well as provided me with ideas for technology that I can incorporate into the classroom. Seeing how everyone responds so differently to assignments is really great because it gives a new perspective on processes that I would not have had otherwise.
I: I persevered through the work
I persevered through assignments that really frustrated me. Some processes and programs came much easier to me than others and some I truly just could not wrap my head around. I found scratch to be particularly difficult. It was frustrating, confusing and I couldn't believe it was a program designed for children. I wanted to give up many times during that assignment and instead I suffered through the confusion and frustration and found a way to create something that was a final piece. Knowing that I could accomplish this even though I didn't think I would be able to is a great feeling. It is important to push through struggles and try to accomplish what you set out to do so that you do not give up before you realize your capabilities. For circuitry I also found this to be the case. I didn't understand the concept or how things connected to make a light light up with a battery and wires and tape. It was all so new and foreign to me that I was intimidated by the concept overall. Working with Darian I was able to ask him questions and we tested things out together to eventually get positive results. This was a really satisfying feeling as I never thought I would be able to accomplish this. The terminology of circuitry really shut me down in the beginning and felt way too science based rather than art based and I am not a science person. Knowing I could create a circuit is a lesson that I will keep with me. I think this experience was important for when I become a teacher and students get frustrated and want to give up. Giving students a task they think may be too challenging and having them stick with it will be a very rewarding experience for them and for myself as a teacher.
E: Eliminated carelessness
I eliminated carelessness by not being so worried about the outcome and being open to change. Knowing that my idea could deviate from what I originally planned gave me a chance to experiment and explore different ideas and processes. By trial and error and sticking with trying things over and over I was able to achieve some really great outcomes. I think having a mindset that this is all about exploring and learning the technology rather than focusing on the outcome actually gave me the chance to create something more meaningful in the long run as I wasn't so afraid to fail and have to try again or start over.
Overall I feel like I have learned about a lot of new forms of technology or have learned new ways to use technologies I already had an understanding of. Seeing other students responses to assignments as well as experiencing the technology for myself first hand, really gave me a good foundation for feeling comfortable with bringing technology into the classroom. I think technology can be a great way to incorporate new forms of art making into the classroom.
