Petra Cortright, born July 19, 1986, is an American artist based in Los Angeles, California. Cortright incorporates a range of media in her work. Her studio practice mainly focuses on video, painting and digital media. Cortright’s main interest is in the use of consumer and corporate software and then distributing that content in some form. Vvebcam, created in 2007, was Cortright’s first video, which was uploaded onto Youtube, a public video streaming platform. The video is a recording of her, playing with the different effects the camera’s software provides. What is interesting about this video is that Cortright’s presence in the video mimics that of the viewer, as they are most likely viewing Vvebcam in a similar setting as to where it was recorded. Additionally, Cortright uses digital software, like Photoshop, to create detailed paintings that are a mix between abstract and figurative. Cortright uses found images and creates digital images that are intended to be like brush strokes. The paintings can be edited and manipulated as much as desired until they are transferred to their final 2D platform. To print onto canvas, paper, aluminum, or whatever other 2D material she is using, Cortright uses industrial printing methods. The titles of her work reflect the use of technology, as they are often file names or extensions or words from a search engine used to find the imagery incorporated into the piece.
