In the reading New Opportunities for Interest-Driven Arts Learning in a Digital Age, Kylie Peppler talks about DIY as an Artistic Practice. I think this is really important to touch upon. With the wide advancements in technology people can learn to do almost anything and expand greatly upon existing skills or interests. Technology gives people a platform to share their skills and learn from others. This is a good way to share ideas and discover new ways to use existing mediums and technology as well as combine materials and processes in new and innovative ways.
Sylvia Libow Martinez and Gary Stager discuss using familiar materials to learn in unfamiliar ways in the reading Invent To Learn: Making, Tinkering, and Engineering in the Classroom. There are materials like certain types of clay and paint that you can use in combination with technology. This is great because technology can sometimes be very intimidating to use for the first time when it comes to creating and making. Using a known material like clay or paint makes the introduction of technology much less intimidating as it incorporates something students already know about and are comfortable with. This also gets students thinking about new and different ways the materials they already know about can be used and combined with other materials/processes to further their creating.

Hi Jackie ! I love the takeaways you wrote about. One of the most amazing things about technology is you can combine it with traditional materials. You get the tactile pleasing part of art making and also the exciting and innovative feeling of tech. That's why I love the acronym STEAM.
